Ceremonial Sword & Scabbard, 1918

Gift of Roger B Harley

This sword and scabbard originally belonged to Roger Harley's father, Lieutenant Edward B Harley (1894-1987), who served during the First World War with the 66th Regiment of the Princess Louise Fusiliers and the 1st Battalion Canadian Machine Gun Corps. Lt Harley purchased this sword in England while stationed there; he used it as part of an informal welcoming ceremony for new soldiers arriving from Canada and Newfoundland. Today, it is carried by the Society Marshall during the Feast of Saint Andrew (November 30) and other special events, as part of the ceremonial Piping in of the Haggis. Saint Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland.
